Open source is an approach to the design, development, and distribution of things (usually software), offering practical accessibility to the instructions required to build the thing. Usually it refers to software projects but the same ideas can be used in projects designing physical objects. Some key attributes are freely available design instructions, ability to reuse and redistribute the instructions, to create derivative works, and open and decentralized decision making.
