Save the Earth

Earth 2100 is a rather television program presented by the American Broadcasting Company network on June 2, 2009. They showed what they called the worst case scenario of our future, rising oceans, fuel shortages, a warming climate, water shortages, the big cities of the south-west abandoned due to a lack of water, diseases, famine, a massive die-off of humanity, and on and on. It's told through the eyes of a baby born on June 2, 2009, and who lives until June 2100 (and beyond) to tell us how she lived through the catastrophe.

When I think of Computer Games it doesn't call to mind an educational experience which will cause someone to plant trees, recycle more often, switch to LED lighting, etc. Computer games seem to be more about awesome graphics depicting horrific violence. But a session at the The Green Software Unconference made an interesting point and idea: GAMES will Save the World How?

Brad Templeton is a high tech pioneer, having been involved with some of the very earliest attempts to commercialize the Internet. This makes him an entrepeneur, and he has published a series of articles outlining a vision of robotically driven cars that can improve human safety on the road and reduce or eliminate the poisonous emissions produced by normal cars. In reading this I remember that I met Brad once, sometime around 1993, during a job interview while he was running ClariNet. He offered me the job but for some reason I turned it down. Oh well.
